Cursed GTK

I love stuff like this. Cursed GTK is a library that allows you to run most GTK2 applications in a text console or in an environment like Twin.

I wonder how the GTK-based front-ends for the Mozilla libraries would fare. It'd be nice to have a text-based browser with a good ECMA Script library behind it.

Update: Damn! I saw this announcement on freshmeat and I dilly-dallied too long and Footnotes beat me to it! Double damn!

Xouvert

I feel a bit stupid posting about this, since it seems that I was the last to know. (I guess that's what happens when you boycott the worst site on the net.) There's a new fork of XFree86 called Xouvert.

Hopefully something will come from this, because nothing came from the XFree86 "Forum." I'm not holding my breath, though.

Gnome Terminal Redux

Miguel of GNOME-fame, has no permalinks. How sad for me. In his February 26th entry, he seems to be having the same troubles with Gnome-terminal that I am:

Later, I was faced with the slowness of the terminal. I have a P4 running at 1.8ghz. I turned off anti-aliasing (everyone told me to). But it still was slow, for instance if you have a window on top of it, and you drag it around, the widget takes a *long time* to repaint. I mean, significantly longer than OpenOffice or Mozilla take to repaint.

It's nice to see that he sees the problem too. I don't know how involved he is with the GNOME project anymore, quotes like this make me think, not much:

...so I promptly filed bug reports for it. Those bug reports were promptly closed, and marked as duplicate because more information was needed (the xterm man page had this). Eventually all this information got logged into another bug and I guess someday it will be implemented.

Havoc, if you're reading, and I doubt you are, this needs fixing.

Update: Miguel now has permalinks, so go read his post.

Gnome-Terminal Problems

The bleeding edge... what fun.

I'm not sure if it's the new nVidia drivers, or the new Gnome-Terminal or some crazy combination of both, but GT has crashed X several times in the last couple of days. Freezes all of my monitors, but not the box. I can log in remotely, but the freeze requires a reboot. I'm inclined to think it's GT, because it does a similar thing on one of my laptops.

I switched back to using good ol' xterm -bg black -fg gold -font pc8x14s and I can't believe how readable that font is. It seems like I go GT-font-hunting on a weekly basis. And wow, the CPU doesn't get jacked if there's lots of text pumping out! If only xterm had GT's "right-click for another one." Yea, I use GNU-Screen. It's great, but there are times when I just want lots of terms.
